Hey. You know that New Years is fast approaching, right? Have you thought about those New Year's resolutions yet, or is that a last-minute "shoot it's 12a January 1st, let's pull out the standard list" type of thing? You know the list. The one that says you'll lose 20 lbs, work out every day, get in shape, and make time for friends and family throughout the year? Yeah, that list.
The list that looks fabulous until a) you get a tiny smidge of a hunger pain, b) get a wee little sniffle and decide that since you're about to die of pneumonia, you better flop in front of the TV and "take care of yourself" instead of going to the gym, and c) decide your family isn't "time worthy" because you had a spat with your sister, and you "take the high road" and stop communicating.
Umm hmmm. THAT list.
So here's what I've been pondering. Deep thoughts (yes, like on SNL, if you are old enough to remember them. which speaking of, we get reminded all the time because you know that Deep Thoughts guy? That one who was socially awkward and quite frankly, just a little bit of a loser? Yes, he is now a senator from my great state. Of course, this is the same great state to unleash Jessie Ventura onto the world, and to elect as governor someone who has been named "the worst senator in US history". We know how to pick 'em here.) I apologize for the outburst. Back to the topic at hand...
You know all of those times throughout the day when you say to yourself: "Oooh, I should probably..." or "I probably shouldn't eat this but..."? What if one actually DID everything they should "probably" do, and REFRAINED from doing everything they "probably shouldn't" do?
Would being "perfect" actually make your life any better? Haven't you ever wondered that, or am I the only nut case here (really, you don't need to answer that)? This is what I mean... If one actually works out 6 times/week, eats 5 servings of fruits and veggies, doesn't eat any sugar, never snaps at one's spouse, etc... will your life actually improve? Is it even possible to work in all the "recommendations" out there?
I have been pondering what "perfect" looks like for my life. Granted, I know I must be pretty close to perfect just as I am (bwahahahaha!). Here is my list of "perfect".
1. I would work out 6 times/week. Now, this is just barely a stretch for me, since I am already up to 6 times/year. Clearly, given my "working out track record" getting to 6 times/week should be a snap.
2.Make RDub's lunch every (work) day (I can admit it, this is my most despised chore. Why? It's so.. tedious. I. don't. like. it.)
3. No sugar consumption (does anyone know if you can actually DIE from going cold turkey here? You know, it has to be just a little bad for you to go from 27 lbs of sugar a day to nothing? Anyone? Anyone?)
4. I would eat none of those "bad" carbs like white rice, and white pasta, and bread. (kill.me.now.)
5. Daily quiet time
6. The house would be picked up daily (can I mention that "picked up" is a very "loose" term in my mind...)
7. I wouldn't spend money on frivolous things (again, "loose" term with many many meanings..)
8. Return emails/voicemails within 24 hours (my friends will positively croak from shock. I apologize in advance)
9. Send a snail-mail note to someone important to me every week
10. I would not take out my (very) occasional crabbiness on anyone
11. I would complete my "to-do" list every.single.day (I shall just be very, VERY careful what I put ON my to-do list....)
12. I would eat 5 servings of fruits & veggies every.single.day
So here's the deal. I'm going to take one for the team and be "perfect" for the next month, just in time to let you know if it's worth keeping those New Year's resolutions (you can thank me later for my great sacrifice on your behalf).
Starting on Sunday, December 5th, I shall be perfect. I shall embrace everything on that list. And if you think I forgot something, you have until Saturday night to tell me I should add it.
One month - 30 days of perfection. Do you think I can do it?
